His second studio album, HOME is undoubtedly the Michigan-born, Nashville-based artist’s bravest excursion thus far, completely rewiring bluegrass with elements of punk, country, folk rock, and genuine psychedelic exploration to fashion something altogether his own.

Barber was a heavy influence on his stepson, introducing him to traditional bluegrass artists at a young age, including Doc Watson, Del McCoury, David Grisman, Bill Monroe, John Hartford, Ralph Stanley, Earl Scruggs, and Larry Sparks. Strings is also a rock and metal fan, influenced by Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Winter, Widespread Panic, Phish, Grateful Dead, Def Leppard, Between the Buried and Me, and Black Sabbath, and played in hard rock and indie rock bands in his teens. Billy Strings was born William Lee Apostol on October 3, 1992, in Lansing, Michigan. His father died of a heroin overdose when he was two and his mother remarried Terry Barber, an accomplished amateur bluegrass musician. The family moved to Morehead, Kentucky, then to Muir, Michigan.
Strings has infused the aesthetic with his own experiences and inspirations, adopting traditional sonic and lyrical idioms to confront contemporary social truths. With guest appearances from the likes of Jerry Douglas and Molly Tuttle and produced by Glenn Brown , HOME marks a landmark on Billy Strings’ ongoing creative journey, its fearless songs and freewheeling approach recasting string-based American music in his own inimitable image. “Highway Hypnosis,” co-written with legend Ronnie McCoury, is a fast-driving scorcher of a tune telling what it’s like to be a true road warrior. While Billy has been consistently growing faster than all the bands around him, even just last year, it seemed like we were in on some sort of secret. There was a certain profound connection you had with other fans. When you met someone and discovered they were as passionate as you were, wherever you were, everything around you faded into the background and you fell deep into conversation. It felt like you were in an episode of The Sopranos sitting in a smoke-filled backroom, discussing who to whack next. The melody of “Watch It Fall” sounds like something straight out of a 30-year-old Hot Rize album, except instead of singing about forsaken love, Strings brings social and political problems to the forefront of the song.
She’d be at her house and I’d be at my house and, at nine o’clock in the morning, we’d say, “We’re going to write 10 songs today.” So I’d be at my house trying to write 10 songs by six o’clock to show Lindsay Lou. We tried this once or twice, and this was one that I actually ended up using. When I was writing it, I tuned my guitar to this weird tuning and I just started playing. You’re in this cabin, the winter’s coming in and you can’t get the fire lit. I was just trying to create a little portrait with my words. We had some string players come in—cello and viola and violin—and there’s a backup vocalist. I’m pretty sure Glenn Brown, my producer and engineer, did some of his cool Buchla tricks on this. I wrote “Home” during an exercise with my friend Lindsay Lou.
